Intelligent Agriculture Program "Smart Seeding"
The inextricable connection of our company with the primary sector is now moving into a new dimension. In collaboration with the Agricultural University of Athens, we present the new innovative Smart Agriculture program “Smart Seed”, an important initiative that invests in the future of the Greek agricultural sector and in the creation of a new generation of producers.
The goal of the initiative is to create an immediately applicable and easy-to-use tool that empowers and shields producers in the face of modern economic and environmental challenges. The region of Thessaly was chosen as the starting point for this large project, the strengthening of which is a priority, both for its importance for the agricultural sector of Greece, and for the need to protect it from the effects of climate change.
The Smart Seed program leverages the University of Agriculture’s high scientific training and extensive research work in the agricultural sector, with the aim of providing producers with a digital platform of precision agriculture, carbon calculation and production estimation for barley cultivation, with the possibility of extension and immediate application to other arable crops and regions of the country. Through an innovative model of data collection from multiple sources, data processing and production forecasting using artificial intelligence algorithms, the digital platform will provide important solutions for sustainable crop management and higher and higher quality production yields, while enabling better planning and cost savings from producers as well as better management of natural resources.
The important initiative of Athens Brewery is a milestone in the company’s long-term support of the primary sector. Through its Barley Contract Farming Program, the first and largest of its kind in Greece, Athens Brewery works with more than 2,000 growers across Greece, uses 100% Greek barley for all of its locally produced products, absorbs approximately 20% of its of annual barley production in the country and certifies 98% of it as a product of sustainable cultivation.
